PL: When is the right time to introduce children to skiing?
Joao Costa: The best age to introduce skiing to children is around 3-5 years old since by that age the coordination skills are already developed enough for such a physical activity. However, it is important to keep in mind that the optimal age might vary as not all children develop at the same pace.
PL: What makes skiing perfect for a family holiday?
Joao Costa: Skiing is a perfect combination of leisure and entertaining activities. The outdoor experience mixed with a cozy after-ski relaxation time is what keeps people excited for their ski holidays. Especially the ski arena of Andermatt, which is the largest ski resort in central Switzerland invites skiers of every level.
PL: What advice do you have for parents planning a ski trip?
Joao Costa: For having a stress-free ski holiday, it is helpful for parents to plan their activities in advance and make sure they have prepared all the necessary equipment and suitable clothing for all family members. Booking ski lessons and having a snack or two in the pocket are just two handy tips that keep the children happy and the parents relaxed. The Chedi Andermatt eases this process with the “Ski butlers” on sight, allowing our guests to book everything in the hotel.
PL: What should people keep in mind when choosing a ski resort?
Joao Costa: When choosing a ski resort it is good to ask yourself the following questions:
What is the weather usually like in this location?
How crowded does this resort get?
How many slopes does it have?
How expensive are the accommodation, travel costs, ski passes, rental equipment, restaurants, etc.?
What kind of activities does the resort offer?
If you are travelling with children, it might be a good idea to aim for a family-friendly resort with easy slopes, children's parks, ski schools and easily accessible accommodation and restaurants.
If you are travelling with your significant other, perhaps a more leisure-oriented ski resort might be a good fit. Romantic dinners, couple massages and good-weather ski days usually do the trick.
If you are travelling with a group of friends, a ski resort rich with sightseeing spots and good pubs might be the winner.
If you don’t want to settle for less and want to experience all of the above, the Andermatt ski resort might be the answer you are looking for.
PL: When is the best time to go skiing?
Joao Costa: While some might argue that February has the best weather conditions for skiing, the ski resorts are often flooded with families due to school vacations. If you are not bothered by the crowds, February is the perfect pick for you.
However, if you want a more peaceful easy-going experience, January might be a better match. The snow is abundant, and the slopes are crowd-free.
When it comes to choosing the ideal time of the day to hit the slopes, skiing between 10:00 and 14:00 will ensure the best weather, while earlier hours will give you intact slopes with fewer visitors. Finally, if you don’t mind the end-of-the-day snow, catching a sunset on your last ride down is an unforgettable experience.
PL: What would you recommend for non-skiers on a ski trip?
Joao Costa: While non-skiers might feel like they are missing out on the fun, there are many other fun activities that will keep them entertained. We recommend sledging, sightseeing with mountain guides, exploring the town, taking a whimsical train ride, or just having a nice lunch at the top of the mountain. The apres-ski bars are also a good social hub that is most certainly not off-limits to non-skiers. While you might not be able to access the on-slopes bars, you can usually find them at the top of the mountain, at the bottom of the slopes or even in the town centre. Last but not least, while your ski friends are out and about, you might consider treating yourself to a relaxing spa experience.
PL: Which are your favourite slopes in and around Andermatt?
Joao Costa: The Andermatt ski resort offers a variety of interesting slopes and it is definitely difficult to choose a favourite one. For more experienced skiers, we recommend the famous Gemsstock run, apt for more experienced skiers. These six kilometres of perfect ski conditions are known for fast-paced challenging down-hill rides, adored by the talented Bernhard Russi, the Andermatt-born world-famous Olympic champion.
For skiers wanting an easy-going ride, with the sun hitting the face and tempting restaurants, we recommend the classic Gütsch-Andermatt ride.
Finally, it is definitely worth mentioning some of the hidden gems -slopes 30, 39, 45, 72 and 132. The view surrounding these slopes and their characteristics are what make these rides unforgettable.
If this doesn’t make you want to pack your ski gear and hit the slopes, we don’t know what will. Give new meaning to your ski holiday when you stay at the Chedi Andermatt and unlock exclusive offers when you book with us.
