All insights below from Anderson Azevedo, Chef Concierge at the Copacabana Palace:

On interactions with the celebrity guests

The concierge team of a luxury hotel has a crucial role in ensuring that guests have an exceptional and seamless experience. This can be a daunting task as most of the guests' requests are made at the last minute, and we need to be well-prepared for everything.

I recall an instance where we had a couple who were staying with us for their honeymoon. It was only during the check-out process that we discovered that they were a prince and a princess. Copacabana Palace has a tradition of glamour, and we strive to maintain excellent relationships outside the hotel to ensure that we can meet the demands of our noble guests.

On off-duty adventures

As a curator of the city, I enjoy exploring new places and going for bike rides around the lagoon. However, I also love going to the beach, and there's one in particular that's a bit tricky to get to, but definitely worth the effort - Praia da Joatinga (Joatinga beach). It's a hidden paradise nestled in the midst of a cliff, and I highly recommend paying it a visit.

On Carnival time in Rio

The carnival in Rio is an unparalleled experience. The city comes alive with vibrant colours, music, and celebrations. The Copacabana Palace hosts the most traditional and classic carnival ball on Saturday night, while first-class samba school parades take place on Sunday and Monday. These parades start at 9:00 p.m. and continue until sunrise, so it's important to reserve plenty of energy. Trust me, though, it's an unforgettable experience that you won't want to miss.

On noteworthy, indelible experiences

The Copacabana Palace has been the venue for countless parties and events over the past century. However, there are two legendary celebrations that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime: our Carnival Ball, held since 1924, and our traditional and glamorous New Year's Eve party.

On a fond memory

Certainly had the honour of participating in the hotel's centennial celebration. This historic landmark was a unique and unforgettable experience for a hotelier.

On personal recommendations of things to do in and around the city and the hotel

Rio constantly finds ways to surprise you from the feats of Modernist Architecture to historical gardens, beautiful beaches and mountains with breathtaking views.

Here are some actions that should be on your list:

Sugarloaf Mountain Sunset

Be ready for a lifetime experience and see the sunset cast beautiful warm tones across the city when watched from atop Sugarloaf Mountain. Visitors and locals alike gather on this natural perch, sharing stories, taking photos, and simply basking in the enchanting beauty of the moment.

Casa das Canoas

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, this house has views of both the ocean and the mountains. Casa das Canoas incorporates many of the principles that made the architect famous: The pool is seamlessly integrated with a large boulder, while the curving walls and windows undulate to a silent rhythm. Light throws itself across the upstairs space, creating a serene atmosphere. These days, it is run and maintained by the Niemeyer Foundation.

Pedra Bonita

This easy hike takes no more than 50 minutes to reach one of the most stunning summits of Rio de Janeiro, the Pedra Bonita. Once you reach the top, brace yourself for a breathtaking view of the amazing landscape of Rio, where the ocean, lagoons and rainforest blend like a work of art. The famous Pedra da Gávea, the biggest monolith close to the ocean in the world (842m) and is known as the 'Table Mountain' of Rio, will be very close to you. And if you're feeling more adventurous, I highly recommend going during the sunrise, which is indescribable.

The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum

The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum opened in 1996 and is considered one of the last great buildings by the Brazilian Modernists. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the building appears to float just above Guanabara Bay, offering beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro.

São Bento Monastery

It is one of the most iconic monasteries in Brazil from the 16th century that showcases the Baroque style of architecture associated with Portuguese colonialism. Its interior is truly spectacular, featuring a gilded altar, painted ceiling, and giant silver chandeliers that weigh over 300 pounds apiece.

Sitio Roberto Burle Marx

A one-hour drive around from the Copacabana Hotel, this is the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx’s original home and is totally worth an afternoon trip. Walk through the gardens with thousands of plant species on display and explore a 17th-century Benedictine chapel along with Marx’s original farmhouse and studio, where his paintings and sculptures are still on display.

Urca Neighborhood

Urca is a charming oasis of serenity at the foot of Sugar Loaf Mountain, a traditional and wealthy neighbourhood perfect for a pleasant walk along the bay and beautiful landscapes. You don't want to miss the breathtaking Claudio Coutinho's Trail.

A former chocolate factory has now transformed into a beautiful multistory art space and cultural centre that houses ateliers, workshops, artists' studios, a furniture store, a brewery, rising fashion brands, and a charming bookshop.

Morning walking from the Hotel

A steep 800m trail, passing through the Atlantic rainforest, can take you to the top of Morro do Leme (Leme Mountain) in just a few minutes of walking from the hotel. At the summit, you'll find an 18th-century fort that offers magnificent views of Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain), the Cagarras Islands, and Copacabana Beach.

In this insightful journey guided by Mr. Anderson Azevedo, Chef Concierge at the Copacabana Palace, we have truly discovered the soul of Rio de Janeiro. This leaves us with a deeper appreciation for Rio's dramatic yet calming beauty and stands as a testament to the fact that every destination is better experienced like a local than a tourist.
