A Serendipitous Discovery That Inspired Conservation

It's definitely fate when you chance upon something that holds the power to turn your world upside down but you wouldn’t know until you’ve taken that big leap of faith for destiny to unveil its existence, and this, in a nutshell, is the very essence of how Grootbos was discovered. Back in 1991, when Michael Lutzeyer along with his wife Dorothee and kids, Sanja and Jan ventured outdoors to camp in the Fynbos slopes overlooking the spectacular Walker’s Bay coast, they couldn’t help but fall in love with the beauty of the location and ultimately make it theirs forever.

Micheal reminisces, “We saw a sign that said ‘FARM FOR SALE’, and we knew we had to own it, but since it was for 375000 rand, we couldn’t afford it. Together with my brother and my parents, we managed to raise the money and build Grootbos. Initially, we used it as a holiday place, but I often wondered what more we could do here. It was only in 1995 that I came up with the idea to build self-catering lodges and to begin with, we built 5 of them. We sold everything in Cape Town and moved to Grootbos to build something here. We were left in despair since no one came as the area was not so known. It was only after a tour guide named Suzanne from the UK said, ‘I can send you guests’, and she did. At that time, my wife cooked meals for the guests, and I did the service — that is the beginning of Grootbos, from such humble beginnings to what it is now.”

Little did the Lutzeyers know, they would be attracting people from across the world, making Grootbos a beacon for progressive travel tourism, preserving 3500 hectares of botanical and wildlife treasures that encapsulate more than 940 plant species, 118 bird species, 29 mammals and 21 amphibians. The name, Grootbos, translates to ‘Big Forests’ in Afrikaans and originates from the presence of imperilled Milkwood forests in the Cape Floristic Kingdom.

Opening of the Lodge–A Symbiosis of Luxury Travel and Conservation

At Grootbos, distinct five-star lodges and villas redefine luxury. Amidst ancient milkwood trees and fragrant fynbos, the Forest Lodge offers serene tranquillity in exquisitely-designed suites with breathtaking views. The Garden Lodge features a seamless blend of elegance and nature is enhanced by panoramic vistas and a new wine cellar. Secluded Sunbird and Fynbos Villas grant an expansive ocean and fynbos views and a bespoke experience crafted by a private guide, a private chef and a butler to indulge your senses.

Grootbos isn't just about nature's marvels; it's an orchestra of experiences. Envision an immersive journey, where horseback rides, 4x4 botanical drives, and leisurely strolls unveil the splendour of this landscape. Here, you don't only witness the flora but embrace it — a tactile, visual, and aromatic communion emerges. From exhilarating Shark Cage Diving and mesmerizing Whale watching to private cruises and thrilling fat bike expeditions – it offers something for all intrepid travellers.

The inspiration to conserve this wonder went beyond making Grootbos another tourist attraction. It was an opportunity to involve the community to preserve and protect this private nature reserve, leading to the invention of the Grootbos Foundation – A NPO dedicated to conserving critically endangered fynbos whilst empowering and educating the surrounding communities to contribute to preserving the Cape Floristic Kingdom through extensive training and skills development in conservation. As Grootbos continues to redefine luxury through its steadfast commitment to preserving the environment, it paves the way for a future where responsible tourism is the true hallmark of grandeur. It embodies a harmonious blend of opulence and ecological mindfulness, demonstrating that the two need not be mutually exclusive.

Harborer of Unparalleled Guest Experience

A Grootbos experience is full of surprises and something beyond ordinary. Travelling for wildlife safaris is one thing but would you ever embark on an adventure to explore the flora of any region to witness how the plants live and thrive? It makes people think twice until they’ve entered the plush landscapes of Grootbos, where beautiful lodges and villas overlooking the lushness of the Cape Floristic Kingdom and the Walker Bay coast redefine luxury. It is that moment when all preconceived notions are shattered into bits and attention is drawn towards the spectacles of nature, marking the beginning of a ‘Grootbos experience’.

It is an enlightening and wholesome experience meeting the guide who so passionately explains to you about the reserve and how a team of 18 seasoned chefs lay out a tailored spread to enhance your culinary experience. Every bespoke culinary encounter is enhanced when paired with an exceptional array of hand-picked wines – a collection garnered over 20 years to serve their guests only the finest picks.

Recalling instances from real-life experiences, Michael shares, “Guests are always apprehensive about going on a flower safari until they do and, more often than not, return with pure astonishment. I'd never experienced a guest not coming back from their botanical safari and saying ‘I didn't even know that plants lived like that. I didn't even realise that they have their own stories. Does that happen in our country as well? Do the ants also play around? That was amazing.’ And that is what we encourage people to come and experience. At the same time, we offer spa treatments in various forms, including the unique experience of forest bathing – venturing into nature, strolling amidst forests, forging a connection with the trees, and discovering a tranquil space where you can truly engage with the essence of nature. Whether it's observing a snail gracefully ascend a tree or delighting in the melodic symphony of birdsong, this encapsulates the wellness philosophy we embrace at Grootbos.”

Immersing yourself in nature and consciously connecting with all the elements in every living moment can be an incredibly exhilarating experience and this is what makes nature reserves like Grootbos a sanctuary for wellness in today’s tumultuous times. Whether it's political, climate change, drought, floods, or wars like Ukraine in the middle of Europe; with the world in a state of upheaval comes along frights and fears. When closer to your roots, in nature, you are bestowed with a sense of calm and solidity leaving you exuberated and relaxed in ways you cannot fathom.

Imagine strolling through the coastline barefoot alone with only your footprints trailing behind, soaking your feet in the cold Atlantic waters, and maybe even catching a glimpse of the sea otter and listening to the melodious whistling of the oystercatcher. That sense of exuberance, intertwined with a profound connection to nature, is followed by returning to your luxurious accommodations, indulging in a refreshing warm shower, witnessing the sun's gentle descent over the ocean horizon and concluding the day with the pleasure of savouring an exquisite, five-star dining experience complemented by a selection of exceptional wines, is what differentiates an experience from a holiday.

Tales of Care and Conservation

Nestled in the heart of the world's richest biodiversity zone, Grootbos combines the wonder of six distinct plant kingdoms that converge here. From the lush equatorial rainforests to the windswept tundra of North Russia — a mere 0.03% of the Earth's expanse cradles this botanical haven. As a testament to nature's artistry, the Cape Floristic Kingdom boasts over 10,000 plant species, with Grootbos boasting more than 940 varieties alone. All of this has been a result of stringent conservation techniques used at Grootbos.

Enlightening us further on Grootbos’ inspiring conservation success stories, Mr Lutzeyer shares, “There are three conservation stories that we’re most proud of. To begin with, we managed to eradicate three and a half thousand hectares of alien species that arrived here from different countries, mainly Australia, known as acacia cyclops. Like fynbos, they also require fire to survive, but the only difference is that they breed four times faster and inject high amounts of nitrogen into the soil, posing a great threat to the fynbos vegetation. By eliminating that threat, all species dependent on the fynbos flourished and thrived – the plants, the animals, the birds, the porcupines and every species up the ladder. In another conservation story, we were able to attract the rarest of the leopard species, known as the Cape Leopards. While I personally haven’t witnessed one, our camera traps have caught a glance of about 13 of them strolling around in the Cape Floral Kingdom. Only a lucky handful have seen them, including my wife, Dorothee. That is the rarity of the Cape Leopard and amazingly enough, we were able to conserve and inhabit these animals where they can be found in their natural habitat, undisturbed by human interference, and in turn, respecting our shared boundaries. Simultaneously, one of the most remarkable narratives lies in our discovery of seven previously unknown plant species, a testament to our commitment to environmental preservation. This achievement has been made possible through the vigilant protection of our surroundings, including the emergence of a dedicated conservancy. This collective effort unites like-minded individuals who have joined forces to ensure the safeguarding and care of the natural ecosystem and the communities that thrive harmoniously within this landscape.”

Revelling in the Marvels of Marine Beauty

When we delve into the narratives that unveil the exquisite marine splendour, Grootbos stands out as an extraordinary gem. What sets Grootbos apart is the harmonious interplay between the lush green of the fynbos and the vast blue of the ocean. Painting a vivid picture, Michael shares, “Can you name another place on this planet where you can leisurely stroll along the coastline, embark on a captivating coastal journey, perch on the rocks, and behold the majesty of the southern right whale? This awe-inspiring creature, renowned as the fourth largest whale globally, earned its name because it was considered the "right" whale to hunt – it floated near the surface and displayed a curious nature. This magnificent species was nearly lost to the world due to rampant poaching until protective measures were enacted.”

He further expresses, “Picture yourself relaxing on the rocks across the coastline and let me assure you, this is no exaggeration – from a mere 5 to 10 meters away, you're gazing at a colossal being that can stretch up to 16 meters in length and weigh a staggering 50 tons. It gracefully floats in the calm embrace of the ocean, accompanied by its precious offspring, which rests gently on the water's surface. As you observe, you might witness the heartwarming playfulness of this mother and calf duo, occasionally joined by other pairs. In today’s turbulent times, you’re relaxing by this ocean and witnessing something you will witness nowhere else on this planet.”

Implementing Impactful Sustainable Measures

In addition to surface-level sustainability practices such as reusing towels and limiting plastic use, Grootbos believes in going a step further and prioritising the reduction of overall consumption and monitoring human waste to prevent overcrowding in landfills, which is already a grave issue. At Grootbos, waste management starts with separating it into different categories, including wet waste, plastics, tins, and glass, enabling them to track the quantity of waste generated by the lodge. Locally sourced products, from fresh produce to construction essentials and everything in between, arrive in their natural form, free from added packaging. With water conservation critical in Africa, the lodges consistently monitor their water consumption and actively seek methods to capture the rainwater and recycle it. The recycled water is further used to irrigate all the lush greens surrounding the property. The lodge also keeps a close watch on its electricity consumption and actively seeks opportunities to conserve energy, such as implementing LED lighting and harnessing solar energy. At present, approximately 250 kW of solar power infrastructure has been introduced to significantly diminish the lodge's environmental impact. These endeavours are merely a glimpse into the broader scope of Grootbos's commitment to sustainability.

Delving a little deeper into sustainability practices, Michael shares, “The inception of the Grootbos Foundation in 2003 marked a pivotal juncture in the realm of sustainability. The driving force behind its creation was the aspiration to integrate the local community into our vision of floral and botanical beauty. To actualize this goal, we initiated a pioneering educational venture – a school founded in 2003. This institution imparts a comprehensive year-long curriculum, equipping individuals to become skilled gardeners and encompass essential life skills. In tandem, we've established a hospitality school that arises from within the community itself. Here, we nurture and develop expertise in the hospitality and tour guiding sectors. We're dedicated to employing and empowering locals from our vicinity, providing them with training and enabling them to excel in various roles. As we construct lodges, spas, and other structures, our approach remains steadfast – we draw upon local talent and source materials predominantly from within our immediate locale.”
