Founder's Note | Homogeneity in Travel: The Pareto Rule

Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc

homogeneous

adjective

consisting of parts or people that are similar to each other or are of the same type

A Beach Club Co. branded by a European Luxury Brand, an iconic swimming pool (you know the one), a buzzy restaurant where people dance on tables, and the wake of a yacht. What do all these things have in common?

They’re on the camera rolls and Instagram of “everyone” you know every summer. This begs the question, with the whole world to explore, why does everyone’s travel look exactly the same?

Part of our quest to bring about a world of better travel involves encouraging “different” travel and going beyond one’s comfort zone. We’re firm advocates that going off the beaten path, now more than ever, brings massive rewards in every way.

St Tropez House

The Pareto Rule states that 80% of the consequences come from 20% of the causes. When it comes to tourism it means that 80% of tourists end up with 20% of the experiences.

That means however beautiful the beaches of St. Tropez might be, the other 80% of the beaches of the south of France, will have 20% of the tourists. From the stunning Calanques of Cassis to hidden strips of sand across the coastline only accessible by boat, there remain rewards for those willing to travel differently.

On a more macro level, France receives almost 100 Million Tourists each year. Most countries including some of our favourites like Namibia, New Zealand, Mongolia and Iceland receive less than 1% of that. It's no surprise that for the modern traveller seeking exclusivity and unique experiences, we find the latter to be far more interesting.

In The Lighthouse, as part of our quest to encourage “better travel”, being different is at the core of our approach. Unarguably, the classics will always have their part to play in our world of travel, but we’re increasingly falling in love with the contrarian views. From travelling in the offseason, and the joys it brings (not to forget its challenges), to discovering lesser-known national parks and choosing “alternative destinations” before hotlisting the cliched ones, we will be sharing a lot more on how you can travel uniquely, and hope it’s going to have an impact on your life and enrich your experiences like you’ve never experienced before.

Until next time…
