Check an Inn | Capella Hotels & Resorts, Ubud, Bali
When Bill Bensley designs a hotel, you know it’s going to be good, especially when its managed by the superlative Capella Group, and set among the Jungles and Paddies of Ubud. But just how good?
The Place | Location and Setting
Capella Ubud may be just about an hour away from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport but feels like a different era. Each carefully thought-out detail transports visitors back to an age of explorers, with stunningly draped canvasses, dusky forests and lantern-lit pathways creating an air of mystery and romance.
The location in a steep Keleki Valley blesses the property with beautiful views of mountains and a babbling river but comes at the cost of long winding staircases, which may not be suited for everyone.
Space | Rooms and Facilities
One of the rare hotel rooms that goes beyond being just a place to rest, our Keliki Valley Tent was truly extraordinary. Accessed via a literal drawbridge walking onto the deck of the tent, was a jaw-dropping moment, especially with its full-size private pool, and panoramic views. The interiors were opulent in keeping with the colonial explorer theme, with tons of tiny easter eggs, like hidden windows, beautiful carvings, and a maxi bar hidden in an explorer trunk.
Common spaces include the beautiful pool, an amazing spa, and our personal favourite the bonfire and outdoor movie area, each playing on the overarching explorer theme.
Vibe | People and Experience
The resort is committed to exceptional services which leave you feeling pampered and rejuvenated from the moment you arrive. With private and beautifully designed accommodations, it offers a range of immersive Auriga wellness activities, which are truly phenomenal. With umpteen focus on personalised experiences, Capella is the retreat you need if you're seeking a secluded and romantic hideaway in a picturesque setting. This resort is a haven for travellers who want to be transported to a world of natural beauty and luxury, all in the middle of Bali's admirable culture.
Taste | Food and Beverage
With two exceptional restaurants, you'll be in for a treat. At Api Jawa, the Japanese robatayaki spot, you'll enjoy a unique 10-course experience with seared seafood and meat, customized with spices, and paired with coconut wine. Meanwhile, Mads Lange bistro offers more laid-back yet delicious options, like crab tacos, Wagyu brisket, and inventive cocktails like "The Cistern." Room service is a highlight, delivered in tiffin boxes to your private terrace. Don't miss the sun-soaked breakfast at Mad's Lange with its diverse and delicious offerings, including Balinese-inspired specials like babi guling hash browns. Capella Ubud's food is a true culinary adventure, from intimate omakase dining to relaxed bistro indulgence, and it's all served in a stunning setting.
Verdict | Summary
Capella Ubud is more than a hotel; it's a portal to a world of natural beauty and luxury right in the heart of Bali's rich culture. This hidden gem among the jungles and paddies of Ubud offers a truly extraordinary experience. From the opulent rooms and immersive activities to the outstanding dining, it's a haven for those seeking a secluded hideaway in Bali. If you're yearning for a unique escape, Capella Ubud is the answer.
