Part 1 | Family Trip Across Australia
Expectations from the Trip
Australia was a destination we were eager to explore, and it truly delivered on all fronts. We were looking forward to experiencing the country’s stunning natural beauty, delicious food, and laid-back vibe, and it didn’t disappoint. The trip started on a high note with Singapore Airlines, which we can confidently say is the way to go—excellent service from start to finish.
Favourite Moments
Our adventure began in Port Douglas after a scenic drive from Cairns. This charming seaside resort, a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, offered a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. We had an amazing time visiting the Daintree Rainforest and taking a peaceful river cruise. The Port Douglas Wildlife Habitat was a real treat, especially seeing local animals like koalas, wallabies, kangaroos, and crocodiles up close.
The highlight, though, was our day out on the Great Barrier Reef. We took a catamaran to Quicksilver, a pontoon about an hour from the mainland, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Snorkelling, scuba diving, and even exploring the reef in a submersible—it was a day full of unforgettable experiences. While the Whitsundays, which we’ve visited before, are definitely more luxurious, Port Douglas was perfect for our group, with plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy in the evenings.
Melbourne was another highlight. Staying at The Park Hyatt was a dream—the hotel is fabulously located, and the rooms and service were top-notch. The city itself is full of character, with great food and plenty to do. We loved our visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and, of course, the shopping!
Our trip to Yarra Valley was just as enjoyable. It’s a very outdoorsy area with so much to do—wine tastings, hot air ballooning, and visiting Healesville Sanctuary to see more of Australia’s unique wildlife. We had a blast fruit picking at Rayners Orchard, and the cheese and chocolate factories were a hit with the whole family. Balgownie Estate, where we stayed, was modern and comfortable, though not quite at the luxury level we were expecting in terms of service.
Finally, we wrapped up our journey in Sydney, which quickly became our favourite city of the trip. The food scene was incredible, with endless options, and the sights—like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge—were breathtaking. Shopping was another big plus. We stayed at Crown Towers Sydney, which was fantastic, particularly the suites and restaurants.
Advice for Visitors
If you’re planning a trip to Australia, Port Douglas is a wonderful choice for a family-friendly getaway with easy access to the Great Barrier Reef, though the Whitsundays are ideal if you’re after a more luxurious experience. In Melbourne and Yarra Valley, be ready for some incredible activities, but keep in mind that food options, especially for vegetarians, can be limited, and renting a car is a must. When in Sydney, be sure to stay at Crown Towers Sydney for a luxurious experience and amazing dining.
Part 2 | A Fam Retreat at Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps
Expectations from the Trip
We were looking for a place where we could truly unwind as a family, and Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps turned out to be the perfect choice. We didn’t want to be tied to a schedule, just relax and enjoy each other’s company in a beautiful setting. What we found there went way beyond our expectations. The Ikigai restaurant, in particular, blew us away with one of the most magnificent Japanese meals we’ve ever had—it was truly beyond anything we could have imagined.
Favourite Moments
The time we spent together as a family at Schloss Elmau was priceless. Whether we were wandering through the stunning property, swimming in one of the many pools, or relaxing in the spa, every moment was filled with joy and relaxation. The hospitality was warm and welcoming, with the staff going out of their way to make our stay comfortable. The rooms were pure luxury, and we were especially charmed by the Indian-themed décor, with its beautiful elephant motifs.
There was no shortage of activities to keep us entertained—biking, hiking, archery, or just unwinding by the bar. Mr. Elmau himself greeted us with such warmth, adding a personal touch to our stay that made it even more special. The fresh mountain air, combined with the sumptuous vegetarian meals prepared for us, made this a food paradise for all, not just meat lovers.
Advice for Visitors
Schloss Elmau is the ideal getaway if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We found that 3 to 4 days here was just the right amount of time to completely rejuvenate. The crisp mountain air, luxurious surroundings, and delicious food make it the perfect place to find serenity.
If you’re looking for another exotic experience, we also recommend checking out Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt in Tegernsee—it’s another gem that added to our unforgettable holiday. Our stay here was nothing short of extraordinary. Set against the serene Tegernsee lake, the hotel offered breathtaking views that greeted us each morning. The combination of modern luxury with traditional Bavarian charm created a warm, inviting atmosphere. From the impeccable service to the gourmet dining experiences, every detail was meticulously crafted to ensure our comfort and delight. The spa, with its panoramic vistas and soothing treatments, was the perfect retreat after a day of exploring the surrounding mountains. It was an experience of pure relaxation and indulgence, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime.
