The View | Resplendent Ceylon's MD, Malik J Fernando on the Future of Sustainable Luxury Tourism in Sri Lanka
— Written primarily based on an exclusive interview with Mailk J Fernando, Managing Director, Resplendent Ceylon.
Sri Lanka's tourism industry has shown an ever-inclining trajectory in the last couple of years and its credit is equally shared by the country’s rich biodiversity, archaic architecture, and beautiful beaches that continue to solidify its position as a bucket-list destination.
In a delightful interview with tourism pioneer, Malik J. Fernando, Managing Director, Resplendent Ceylon, we get exclusives from his journey in Tourism and his enlightening views on the present and future of tourism in Sri Lanka. His thoughts on the importance of curating authentic experiences, the vital role of responsible tourism, and how Sri Lanka can pave the way for a more sustainable future for the industry make it quite an interesting read.
PL: Why tourism is important to Sri Lanka?
Mailk J Fernando: Tourism is not just vital to Sri Lanka's economy; it's the heartbeat of our nation's progress. As a diverse and culturally rich island, tourism brings in invaluable revenue, provides job opportunities, and fosters cultural exchange. It's a conduit for global recognition, showcasing our breathtaking landscapes, heritage sites, and warm hospitality.
PL: Your Journey into Tourism.
Mailk J Fernando: My tourism journey began with a deep-rooted passion for showcasing Sri Lanka's beauty to the world. Inspired by my family's legacy in tea, I ventured into hospitality, founding Resplendent Ceylon. Each resort tells a story, a testament to our commitment to sustainable luxury and authentic experiences.
We started with renovating a collection of tea estate bungalows over 18 years ago, as a way to showcase tea to the world, and that evolved into Ceylon Tea Trails, Sri Lanka’s first Conde Nast Gold List Property, and the benchmark for luxury tourism in Sri Lanka.
Shortly afterwards, we built Cape Weligama, Sri Lanka’s flagship Southern property, with stunning views from a one-of-a-kind clifftop location. The resort was featured in publications across the world and celebrated 10 years since opening this year. A fresh new look and new features can be expected in November this year in time to celebrate a decade in the industry.
Wild Coast tented Lodge in Yala followed soon after, and stands tall as one of the most unique tented lodges in Asia, if not the world. The design, inspired by the boulders around the resort has won several awards over the years, and the cocoons are an absolute guest favourite. The game drives offered at the resort provide an insight into the rich biodiversity that Yala offers, including Leopards, Elephants, Sloth Bears, a broad selection of birdlife and more.
PL: How the tourism business is transforming in Sri Lanka?
Mailk J Fernando: The tourism landscape is evolving rapidly. Travelers seek more than just luxury; they crave immersive, sustainable experiences. Resplendent Ceylon embraces this shift, curating bespoke adventures while prioritizing environmental stewardship and community engagement. Curating Meaningful Journeys is at the heart of everything we do, and this forms the core of all our guest journeys.
PL: What is the future of tourism in Sri Lanka?
Mailk J Fernando: With an increased interest in Sri Lanka, the future of tourism looks promising. We are now seeing significant stability, and as a result, we are seeing guests planning ahead, and booking well into 2025. We will continue to take a key role in strengthening Sri Lanka's positioning in the market, and pioneer responsible tourism practices, to redefine luxury travel, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable future for Sri Lanka's tourism industry.
