PL: What Makes Raja Ampat Such a Special Place to Dive?

Thibaud Epstein: Raja Ampat is a special dive destination due to its unparalleled marine biodiversity, healthy coral reefs, pristine ecosystems, unexplored dive sites, unique marine life interactions, and conservation efforts. The region, often called the "Heart of the Coral Triangle,” boasts over 1,500 fish species, and 537 coral species, and offers a chance to explore both big marine life and intricate macro ecosystems. The remote location has helped preserve its natural beauty, making it a haven for divers and underwater enthusiasts.

PL: Which is your favourite dive site in the Raja Ampat?

Thibaud Epstein: Some dive sites in Raja Ampat are widely regarded as exceptional and often recommended by divers. One such site is Cape Kri. It's renowned for its incredible biodiversity, strong currents attracting various marine life, and the opportunity to witness large schools of fish.

Other notable dive sites in Raja Ampat include Blue Magic, known for encounters with various Pelagic species, and Misool's Fiabacet, celebrated for its stunning coral formations and underwater landscapes. We also love to explore the Four Kings and Daram as they are often less crowded, and we get to dive into them alone.

Ultimately, the "best" dive site may vary based on factors such as the type of marine life you want to see, your diving experience level, and your personal preferences for underwater scenery. It's recommended to consult with local dive operators and guides who can tailor recommendations to your specific interests and skill level.

PL: What is the attraction of Raja Ampat for Non-Divers?

Thibaud Epstein: Raja Ampat appeals to non-divers with its stunning islands, snorkelling, bird watching, cultural experiences, hiking, kayaking, and opportunities for relaxation and photography. The diverse landscapes, rich biodiversity, and unique Papuan culture make it a captivating destination for various interests.

PL: What is one particular dive that has special memories for you?

Thibaud Epstein: A dive site called Mayhem was a special one for me. An underwater pinnacle that delivered it all: schools of jacks, bumped parrotfish, Barracudas, trevallies, Manta rays — it was a magic dive, and these underwater pinnacles, of which there are quite a few of world-class quality, are my favourite.

PL: How does tourism in Raja Ampat benefit the locals and contribute to the conservation of the Ecosystem?
